Q&A: Lack of privacy in strata unit – what can you do?

A LookUpStrata reader wanted to know what can be done about a lack of privacy in their apartment due to a common walkway directly outside of their door and patio.

Unfortunately, if the area in question is properly categorised as common property and there are no by-laws restricting access to that area, there is little you can do to prevent residents utilising the area in question.

However, you could apply for a by-law to erect a fence, erect privacy screens etc to make your life more private and comfortable. You could also ask (and pay) for exclusive use if the Owners Corporation was willing to sell it to you
